The Types of Food Additives
What is a food additive?
Ø Food additive is a natural or synthetic substance which is added to food to:
->improve the taste and texture
->preserve and extend food storage life (longer shelf life)
Ø There are two main groups of additives:
a) Preservatives and antioxidants to protect food from being spoiled by bacterial attack or atmospheric oxidation
b) Flavouring agents, stabilizers, thickening agents (thickeners), and dyes
